Early Orthodontic Treatment for Children

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, we can spot potential issues early and determine if treatment may be needed.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Early orthodontic treatment (Phase I) usually begins around age 8 or 9. Phase II typically begins around age 11 or older. The goals of early treatment are to:

  • Guide jaw growth and improve bite alignment (e.g., crossbites)

  • Create space for permanent teeth to come in correctly

  • Reduce the likelihood of extractions or surgery later on

Signs Your Child May Need Early Orthodontic Care

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth (normal loss starts around age 5; all permanent teeth are usually in by age 13)

  • Difficulty chewing or biting

  • Mouth breathing

  • Thumb sucking after age 5

  • Speech difficulties

  • Protruding teeth

  • Teeth that don’t meet properly or at all

  • Jaw shifting when opening/closing (crossbite)

  • Crowded front teeth at age 7 or 8

Why Timing is Important

By the time most children finish their teens, their jawbones stop growing. Orthodontic treatment in adulthood can take longer and may require extractions or surgery. Addressing issues early can mean easier, faster treatment—and may prevent more complex procedures later.

If your child is between 7 and 8 years old and shows signs of needing orthodontic care—or if your family dentist has recommended an evaluation—contact us today to schedule your complimentary consultation. Dr. Wiggins or Dr. Boswell will guide you through the best next steps for your child’s healthy, confident smile.
