Orthodontic Emergency Care – Summit Orthodontics
At Summit Orthodontics, Dr. Wiggins and Dr. Boswell understand that orthodontic issues don’t always happen during regular office hours. If you are experiencing an urgent orthodontic concern that cannot wait, please call us at 303-805-7111 and follow the instructions for after-hours care.
Same-Day Emergency Appointments
If you have a problem such as a poking wire, broken bracket, or other discomfort, contact our office as soon as possible. We do our best to accommodate same-day appointments, but all visits — including emergency care — must be scheduled in advance. We cannot accept walk-ins without an appointment.
Prompt care is essential to prevent treatment delays. Whether it’s discomfort or damage to your orthodontic appliances, our team will work quickly to help you feel comfortable and keep your treatment on track.
Temporary Fixes You Can Try at Home
While we always recommend calling us promptly, you may be able to temporarily relieve discomfort until you arrive at our office.
Loose Pieces: Remove any completely detached parts and place them in a small bag or envelope to bring to your appointment.
Poking Wire: Place orthodontic wax over the sharp edge or gently push it down using a pencil eraser.
Shifted Wire: Use tweezers or needle-nose pliers to guide it back into place. If necessary, tie it with dental floss to hold it temporarily. As a last resort, trim it with sanitized nail clippers.
Irritation: Apply orthodontic wax to the area and rinse with warm salt water to soothe sore spots.
Common Orthodontic Discomforts & Solutions
General Soreness
After getting braces, it’s common to experience tenderness for 3–5 days. Stick to soft foods until chewing becomes comfortable. Rinsing with warm salt water can help relieve gum irritation. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen may also help.
Loose Bracket or Band
If still attached to the wire, leave it in place and add wax for comfort. If it comes off completely, store it safely and bring it to your next appointment.
Loose Wire
Guide it back into place using tweezers or pliers, or secure it with floss until we can see you.
Elastics (Rubber Bands)
Wearing elastics as directed is essential for aligning your bite. If you have questions about how to wear them or what they do, let our team know during your visit. Please click to download a PDF for more information.
Palatal Expander Adjustments
In a well-lit area, tilt the patient’s head back.
Insert the key into the hole until it is firmly in place.
Push the key toward the back of the mouth until the next hole appears.
Press back and down toward the tongue to remove the key.
We can also provide printed instructions for home use upon request.
At Summit Orthodontics, Dr. Wiggins and Dr. Boswell are here to ensure you receive prompt, compassionate care whenever orthodontic issues arise. Whether it’s a quick fix or a more complex repair, our team will help you protect your smile and stay on track toward your perfect results.
