TMJ–TMD Prevention and Treatment
Understanding Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)
Millions of people across the U.S. experience chronic jaw, face, and neck pain, along with frequent headaches. In many cases, these issues can be linked to Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD), a condition affecting the temporomandibular joints (TMJs)—the hinges that connect your jawbone to your skull.
Because these joints are constantly at work when you chew, speak, swallow, or yawn, inflammation or misalignment can cause discomfort and even limit jaw movement.
Common Symptoms of TMD
If you are experiencing any of the following, TMD may be the cause:
Jaw pain or tenderness
Pain, ringing, or fullness in the ears
Frequent headaches or neck pain
Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when moving the jaw
Muscle spasms around the jaw
Changes in your bite or how your teeth fit together
Locked jaw or difficulty opening the mouth
If you notice these symptoms, Dr. Cassy Wiggins and Dr. Boswell recommend scheduling a consultation to determine if TMD is the source and to create a personalized treatment plan.
Not All Jaw Pain Is TMD
Jaw pain can be caused by many factors. Even if your symptoms aren’t related to TMD, there are steps you can take to keep your jaw healthy and reduce the risk of joint issues:
Relax your face — “Lips together, teeth apart”
Avoid teeth grinding and clenching
Skip gum chewing
Use a headset or hold the phone to your ear—don’t cradle it between your neck and shoulder
Chew evenly on both sides
Avoid resting your chin on your hand
Practice good posture—keep your head up, back straight, and shoulders relaxed
While TMD can occur even without braces, early intervention can help prevent symptoms from worsening.
Customized TMD Treatment Options
Dr. Wiggins and Dr. Boswell offer specialized appliances to help relieve jaw pain, correct bite alignment, and improve overall comfort.
Centric Relation Appliance (CRA)
A Centric Relation Appliance is designed to reduce muscle tension caused by an improper bite. This removable acrylic device allows the jaw muscles to relax, easing discomfort.
Treatment Process:
Take an impression of your mouth.
Insert the CRA, adjust the acrylic surface, and provide home care instructions.
Follow-up visits every 4–6 weeks to monitor progress.
Anterior Repositioning Appliance (ARA)
An Anterior Repositioning Appliance helps reposition the lower jaw forward so the TMJs can settle into a healthier position. This often reduces or eliminates jaw clicking, popping, and pain. The ARA is designed to mimic an ideal bite, relieving strain on the jaw joint.
Treatment Process:
Take an impression of your mouth.
Insert the ARA, adjust bite alignment with added acrylic, and review home care instructions.
Wear the appliance full-time for 6–9 months, with check-ups every 4–6 weeks.
Once symptoms have improved, many patients are ready for orthodontic treatment such as braces.
